They don't. I used a wet-erase chalk marker on them. It's waterproof and sort of soaks into the tires.

It's this Chalk Ink Pen. I highly recommend it. Basically, it goes on like a marker, but dries to where it won't smudge off like normal chalk. But comes off fairly easily with a wet paper towel.
