Edit: OP, if an online roll session is something you really want to try out one day, I think the biggest chance for success would be if you could gather a good amount of people who do light shows (maybe post on /r/gloving? or low-key message some people from there?).
I think if you can guarantee that some glovers, conjurers, poi/glowstick spinners, and/or orbit spinners will be present, the conference would be more likely to keep everyone's attention. Also, it might be necessary to line it up with a live stream of any type of event/podcast.
Edit 2: (I don't know how Skype works, so sorry if this doesn't make sense.) Besides the people doing light shows taking turns being the main video feed that everyone sees, maybe once in a while, someone can stream a visualizer like Milkdrop 2. A bonus would be if any of you guys had a pair of chromadepth glasses.
Btw, even if you're not rolling, buying and using those 3 dollar Chromadepth glasses would still be awesome. It makes anything towards the color red look close to you, and anything towards blue look farther away. So if you viewed a visualizer that was mostly a red border working it's way towards a blue center, it would give the appearance of a tunnel going into your monitor/tv.
A really good example would be to open Milkdrop 2 and load the 'adderassi - visitor' or the 'phat+fishbrain+eo.s_mandala_chasers_remix' preset'. Trust me. Buy a pair.
