For me it's kinda hard to really recommend something for a super beginner since I'm a native speaker who just kinda needs to brush up, but I really liked these three books:
Serbian an Essential Grammar
Colloquial Serbian
Teach Yourself Serbian
I would couple all this with checking with native speakers (family?) because some things in these I've heard are outdated. I would also just lightly peruse some Serbian sites once you get better to take in more native material. serbiancafe.com is pretty popular!
The Assimil Serbo-Croate Sans Peine which is no longer produced is probably my favorite audio lesson. They start out slow and build up speed over time. Although it very quickly starts out with short sentences in lesson 2.

OP, you have a native speaker close to you at all times, all you need is a good textbook, patience and some hard work. Do not waste your money on those silly courses, just study the grammar and vocabulary from good textbooks and use it when speaking Serbian to your girl.
