Suggestion on your video - lighting is really important. Invest in a softbox.

Something like this would be a great place to start. As long as it puts out enough light to clearly illuminate your space and is diffused enough to not generate harsh shadows, you'll be in good shape.
Grab a pair of these lights. They're shitty and really white but they will do the job on your budget.
As for the Rode, it's probably not a good idea since you will need a boom pole, stand, XLR extension, and audio recorder to get it to work to its full potential. You can blow your $500 alone right there. So, for now, pick up a VideoMic Pro.
Haha, check it out. These come with two big caveats though––one of the lights is faulty and no longer works. Also, the company just doesn't respond to any problems. So if you want a super cheap option, I think these work, but caveat emptor.
