Personally speaking, I wouldn't want to own a gun in a shared house. It's a lot of responsibility and I really don't think it's worth the stress unless the neighborhood you're living in has a high occurrence of armed house robberies. I'm at 14th and Monroe and had someone try kicking my back door in around 2am last year. I saw the guy trying to break in take off as soon as I turned a light on.

There's a bunch of other weapons that you can buy that are less regulated and quite effective. My choice would be a paintball gun. They're not considered weapons or guns in DC and you can get one that shoots full auto for under $300. With a tight spring and some tweaking, it'll shoot with enough force to leave bruises. Possibly knock someone out if you hit them between the eyes.
