So I can kind of understand why they didn't just use off the shelf hooks which work fine in a building that doesn't move, but since they were custom building a solution anyway, couldn't they have just made a hook with a smaller side panel?

3 inches wide and about a foot long side panel would accommodate most any standard bike style and keep the bikes from swinging around.

I built this out of an 8' board from Home Depot and 5 Delta Leonardo Bike Hooks which are spaced 21" apart to leave room for handle bars and to make bike removal easier. Studs are easy to find in the garage, so I put 12, 4" wood screws through them to hold everything up.

Hello! I, firstly, want to tell you that I think your layout of just fine. I'd like to help you make your space feel more cohesive. I think this can be accomplished very inexpensively, but it will require a little work. I'm going to suggest a color palette that has the elements of your room in it with an added color of stone grey. Palette here: http://www.colourlovers.com/palette/3058398/Livingroom_pallette

I'm going to address the things that you don't like.

I had a bike that was 8 years old and in perfect condition. After a bad biking accident, I had stored it away for several years. It held a lot of memories of times that I had spent with my father; we rode bikes together almost every day for years before my parents divorced.

I finally got it back out, thinking riding to and from campus would be a great way to ease back into cycling. I got a cable lock and parked it in a patrolled deck. I rode it 3 times to campus, and on the 3rd time, it was stolen. I was totally, completely heartbroken. The cops who were supposed to be patrolling the deck were all huddled up BSing with each other. One came to take a report from me. He scoffed at me when I told him I had a cable lock, not a U-lock and told me I'd never see my bike again.

It's a shitty lesson, and it still bums me out pretty fucking badly that someone stole something so special to me. I know it was my own fault for not securing my bike properly, but I didn't realize how rampant bike theft is, especially in the city.

So, I feel your pain. It sucks to have something stolen and I'm sorry that you had to experience this. I immediately went out and bought this lock and am looking into some other locks for my wheels and seat.

If your landlord agrees to you storing your bike inside, I'd recommend this for storage. It's a real space saver in an apartment.

Good luck!

I use those in my apartment:

For reference, it comes with DRY WALL plugs. Meaning, it should be able to hold a 30lb bike without any concerns without any wood behind it.

I still mounted it to a stud and it held my own body weight 175lbs so you should be good.

I know this might seem anecdotal since it's a completely different way to hang a bike but I wanted to show you how well those should work regarding weight.

I have two of these. They are cheap, easy to install and take down, and hold my bikes firmly in place.

I had to bend the hook on the one for my mountainbike a bit because it doesn't like the extra-wide mud tires I have on it, but I've experienced no problems with my racer. And as an added bonus it can hang as close to a wall in a corner as your handlebar allows. My racer sticks out about 20 cms, except for the handlebars and pedals.

Edit, just saw that you have fancy rims, let me just measure out the clearence of the hook.
