The working dogs on base have a nice bright 'DO NOT PET' collar they wear around. I'd recommend picking one up, save you some trouble!

I have a Rottie as well, and got my DNP warnings for the same reason!

Unfortunately, it didn’t discourage people from petting my dog when in public (mostly when tied up outside for 2 mins while I went in to buy a coffee). I added a muzzle to the equation and even still, that didn’t work.
Next, I used the DNP collar as well as a black and white patch on his harness. This still didn’t work and people would still come up and either pet him or encourage rude behaviour from him.
The only thing that worked for me was this 2” wide black and white DO NOT PET collar from Stillwater Kennel Supply. This stands out like a sore thumb, you can’t miss it on his black fur:

You can see the message from a far ways away (even if only “NOT PET” or “DO NOT” are facing the viewer, the message is clear).
I haven’t had a single person harass him or pet him while we’re out. I’ve also since added his Do Not Pet patch to the Velcro on his weight vest
