OTC Differin gel was a gamechanger for me, and from the ingredient list I don't believe it has any cetyl alcohols.

Adapalene (another retinoid, milder than tretinoin) has recently been made available without a prescription. You can order it here, on amazon. And yes, it is effective for closed comedones and less irritating than tretinoin.
