I was going to recommend one of these. I'm not sure how well they'd work if you have carpet near the door, but if you have wood or tile it it should work very well.

Also, if you have windows that slide open sideways (or sliding glass doors), get wooden dowels to hold them in place. 1/2" PVC pipe will work too. I have these cut in lengths that allow me to open the doors and windows 3-4", just enough to let air in but not enough space for anyone to squeeze through.

Finally, if you have windows you think are vulnerable, you can get some of these stick-on window alarms. They're cheap, very loud, and you can turn them off if you want to (you stick them to the inside of the window). What I like is that anyone standing outside, looking at the back of the alarm, will see a red circle with a black doberman on it, and the words: "ALARM: PROTECTED BY DOBERMAN SECURITY."

Good luck!

EDIT: I just noticed that the company also sells window decals with the same image - you can get a package of six for less than five dollars.

I haven't really gifted anyone with security related items, but I did work with security for a while. This for door locks, and this for main windows. Bring a few wooden sticks for sliding windows. Make sure they are a bit thick and won't break/crack easily. I also recommend some legal self-defense items - check local laws.

I have a couple of these on a sliding glass door. They work pretty well and they are sensitive enough to trigger when you're opening the door. Problem is if my cat messes with them they can go off.

As for door opening something like this or this

Now granted I'm no guru when it comes to home defense. I live in a nice area where people can leave their bikes out over night unlocked and expect them to be there in the morning.

I have insurance so if I do get robbed I'm covered. I have valuables secured as best as I can since i'm renting. My concern is when my gf or I are home and someone tries to get in or something I want to be awake.

To piggyback on this comment in regard to window alarms, if you've got a sliding glass window, there are ultra slim alarms available as well that allow the window to function as intended.
