I used to have carpal tunnel but was able to resolve the issue with this keyboard:

Putting weight on my wrists exacerbated the situation so this keyboard taught me to only use my fingertips to type. If you try to rest your hands on it then it will collapse.

Also if you are already feeling pain, then you should wear wrist braces that have a splint for a while - even when you sleep. The goal is to always keep your wrist straight. I noticed other task like driving i would have my wrist bent on the steering wheel causing pain so I had to train myself not to do that. Here’s a good brace:

I also use a track ball mouse and I never rest my palm on the actual mouse. I only use my fingertips. It takes a while and some training but i almost never have pain or wear braces anymore.

Ok, so it’s the ulnar nerve. Tingling in the fingers can be caused by an injury anywhere in the nerve, such as the wrist or the elbow. If you have pain in the wrist, and none in the elbow, it’s probably the wrist, but I can’t say for sure. You can try touching the ulnar nerve in your elbow on both sides and seeing if it’s more sensitive on the affected side. You can see the location on Wikipedia, but basically when you hit your “funny bone” and it hurts, you’ve actually hit the ulnar nerve. But don’t hit it now, just press with your finger and see if it hurts more on one side.

Anyway, the cause of your injury is probably mechanical. This can be pressure on the nerve for an extended time (sleeping on it), or overuse (RSI). Perhaps a combination. What kind of activities do you do with your hands? Computer use? Playing games? Exercise? It’d be good to rest the affected arm. For example, if you use your phone a lot, you could try moving it to the other pocket and holding it with the other hand.

For sleeping, you can fold a towel and wrap it around your arm, using some tape to secure it. It doesn’t need to be too tight, the idea is more to give you some padding and to keep you from bending your arm or wrist. You can wrap it around your elbow with your arm straight. This would work pretty well for your elbow, so you don’t need to get an elbow brace.

If the problem is more with the wrist, and there’s an RSI component, I think it’s more important to allow it to rest during the day, by wearing a brace for a week or two (you can take it off at night). If the price is too high, you may be able to find a used one locally, on Craigslist or something. People usually use these for a limited time and then just keep them.

But actually, you may be able to just splint it yourself. Get a long, flat piece of metal, wood or plastic, and place it on the back of your hand and forearm, going over your wrist. Then wrap gauze or a strip of cloth around your forearm and hand, going around your thumb too. Look at the professional RSI braces for inspiration.
