It goes the other way- have you seen any real studies showing that dogs are "den animals"? The only study done is on in the 80s, looking at 80,000 feral/wild dogs. The only dogs who "den" are pregnant/lactating dogs and their young puppies, who go outside often as soon as they can walk. Adult dogs seldom den. Dogs sprawl wherever they find a comfortable spot. The assertion that dogs are "den animals" as a basis for confining them in crates is as tenuous as saying that dogs are "dominance animals" because sometimes they growl at each other.

The most common anecdotal support for crating success is that "my dog loves his crate, and goes to it when he is scared." This is not a sign of success of any sort, but rather a sign of induced agoraphobia. This is no different than the 20-year prisoner who is afraid to be free, or the barn sour horse who is terrified to be out in pasture. A dog should be able to handle fear in a healthy manner, and needing a "hole" to crawl into is not necessarily beneficial (although it can be a funtional coping mechanism for the extremely anxious individual).

Crating by itself is not harmful. I am not opposed to crating- dogs should learn to handle confinement of all types with goodwill and trust. I AM opposed to pretending that crating is a cure-all for problems, or even that it is benificial to the dog. Crating is a convenience for us, and if done right can make living with a dog more peaceful and safer for our stuff. However, most people who crate (almost half!) report crating their dogs for 8+ hours at night, then 8+ hours while they are at work. This qualifies as over-crating, which is very harmful. For one thing, a crate does not allow a dog to move about enough, which- just as in humans- impacts circulation, heart function, organ function etc. It can also lead to increased rates and severity of arthritis and dysplasia.

Muzzling- properly muzzled and trained dogs are very safe. A basket muzzle allows a dog to pant normally and drink water, even eat kibbles. Just as in crating, just throwing one on a dog can cause the dog to panic and damage his paws- esp dewclaws- trying to get it off.

Gotta go but tl:dr is that crating is fine, but not as great as advocates say, and is based on science as tenuous and misleading as dominance theory is. I'll write more later.

the only cage your dog should ever be inside is one where there is no front door attached to it, so the dog can come and go freely. Locking dogs inside a cage is abuse. Just don't get a dog.
