On a side note, considering your suspicion (regardless of validity), you could always return it and buy a brand new copy on Amazon for around $24, which is a better value IMHO. :)

Dragon Warrior was the Americanized NES versions of 'Dragon Quest' from Japan. After the Square Enix merger (I think) they adopted the Dragon Quest name for all iterations.

Short of a miracle, emulator is just about the only way you're going to play Dragon Warrior I-IV.
While there's a handheld remake for IV(on DS) most of them haven't seen a remake/re-release.
I'll add Dragon Quest V(on DS) and Dragon Quest VI(on DS) as well.
I honestly prefer the fan translations on those two, though.
There was also an anime series done relating(roughly) to the story of Dragon Quest/Warrior III. It aired very briefly in Canada when I was little. Think I only caught the first ~4 episodes, if that.
Maybe not right away, but all re-releases have been changed to Dragon Quest. this is the version I have on the DS
