I use something like this. I just bought a set of 4 for like $2 or $3 at the grocery store. I just put my phone on that while it's on the table.

You probably tightened it down too much. It only needs to be snug, not torqued down.

In a pinch, you could use a wrench with a towel wrapped around it to protect the finish on the mod, but there's still a risk of slipping and scratching it up.
