There is the Edifier P12. They also have a active version with remote control. If he is open to spent a little more, the Canton SP 206 is a good pick.
For around $100, there are a couple of options.
First of all, for $50, you made a fantastic purchase. No need to feel bad about yourself for that. The fact that you still found that after "not doing the research" is pretty impressive.
Moving on, there definitely are better options in the $100 range.
Using that same amp:
Micca MB42X. They will give a much cleaner sound than the B652.
The B652-Air. These will get lower than the miccas, but the bass won't be as tight.
Edifier P12. These will be similar to the Miccas, but they have a front port, in case you need to put them up against a wall.
In my opinion, you should get the Miccas instead, if you can't get PA to change your order for the B652-Air. Either way, you'll be happy.

Okay... I know I said seconded Edifier... but I don't like the look of that system. Perhaps try getting away from those all-in-one systems. How about this:
Subwoofer
Edifier passive speakers
SMSL AD18 (currently on sale)
Only 50 quid more, and now you have a much better quality system that is upgradable over time!
You might be able to forgo the SMSL and just try to find a decent used AVR in your area for 50 quid or less. I don't know the used market across the pond.
Try Craigslist, maybe? When I visited Italy a couple of months back, I was surprised to find out they do, in fact, have craigslist.
Any thoughts on these speakers? I'm looking to spend about $100 on a set of PC speakers for a gift. I see the Micca MB42x are highly reviewed and about the same price, but I'm not sure what else I'll need to get them to run on a PC.

Also considering these which have good reviews but very few, or maybe this, but it looks... cheap? And reviews are meh.
