There was a recent book about this stuff: Sister Bernadette's Barking Dog: The Quirky History and Lost Art of Diagramming Sentences. Perhaps one of the books Google indicates as related?
Warriner's English Grammar and Composition and The McGraw-Hill Handbook of English both have sections dealing with sentence diagramming.
It would help to know when and in what country your course was.
