>> We use (be) going to when we have already decided to do something. A: Sue and I have decided to have a party. We're going to invite lots of people.

But doesn't "will" also work there too?

Consider:

  • A: Sue and I have decided to have a party. We will be inviting lots of people.

There's a 4th edition now: English Grammar in Use Book with Answers and Interactive eBook: Self-Study Reference and Practice Book for Intermediate Learners of English 4th Edition; and the paperback has 391 pages.

The "BE going to Verb" construction has recently been going through changes, and is currently going through changes. Linguists are writing books and articles that attempt to describe some of those ongoing changes. It seems to be an interesting topic for them. Even native English speakers will probably have difficulty trying to express accurately how they think they are using that construction.

And so, when a general grammar type of book is providing simplistic rules on this kind of construction that is even now undergoing changes, some of which are influenced by dialect (BrE vs AmE), then, you'd probably want to have a barrel of salt handy. :)
