There's also a book all about this moment, and the season 2 finale of Video Game High School made homage to it.

A lot more people (including me) saw the video and didn't understand the full extent of what was going on than did. Here's an article that explains it a bit more and lays bare the mindgame that was going on in a pretty straightforward and satisfying way.

Part of a chapter focuses on the FGC. It was just a lot to juggle with four major games to cover, and the FGC has traditionally seen itself as separate from eSports, although you're seeing a lot more investment in the past year.

My main source for that was David Graham, who also wrote a great piece about why that scene is different:
