I'm a fan of wearing a functional vest like this one from Columbia or this one from Ex Officio. Vests are pretty functional, especially on long flights/bus rides etc. You can keep items like headphones, snackbars, a camera, flashlight, keys, phone, passport etc. conveniently accessible without having to get up and move around to get them out of your pants pockets.
Some people might say they look kind of touristy, but my kind of travel is more adventures like kayaking, hiking, motorbike tours etc. and I'd rather have something more practical. My vest is loose fitting and can go over jackets. It goes great with my puffy jacket. Even without a jacket its warmer than you might expect.
