It doesn't have to be a cult for a leader to engender violence from their followers; that can easily happen within the realm of politics & the media alone.

I think a better book to read might be 'Fascism: A Warning' by Madeleine Albright. It's surprising how closely Trump's ascension mirrors that of Mussolini's when she lays it all out; and the recent developments (particularly the threats of violence) are only solidifying her case.

Both American Liberals and American Liberal Conservatives are Liberals under Alain's definition. American Liberals are against Socialism and Communism and frequently conflate the two with fascism.

In fact Madeline Albright recently wrote a book calling Hugo Chavez a fascist

>What have you seen that gives you this impression?

Oh not much. Just things like this and this and this and this and this.

> This is weird because I've seen US military and law enforcement wear balaclavas. Hiding ones identity isn't unique to terrorists, nor is it automatically indicative of cowardice or nefarious intentions.

I'm going to assume you've never been in the military. We rarely wear balaclavas. There are typically only two occasions: (1) it's fucking freezing cold outside or (2) we are expecting to encounter a LOT of dust and debris (helictoper coming into an LZ, for example), but even then usually just goggles and a neck gaiter held over the face will do; the balaclava is kind of overkill.

> Maybe. But that's not the purpose. Ask yourself why Hong Kongers are doing the exact same thing.

Holy fucking false equivalence. Those people live in a legitimately oppressive surveillance state that can (and absolutely does) retaliate against dissenters and their families. Want to know more about surveillance in China? Listen to this and this and you'll see why protesters in Hong Kong hide their faces.

> They aren't provocateurs. They didn't provoke anything. They are a reaction to the provocations of the far right.

That simply isn't true sometimes. They absolutely have provoked violence, not just reacted to it. Pretending otherwise is to stick your head in the sand.

None of what I am saying should be taken as an excuse for the violent, hateful, and bigoted rhetoric and actions of those on the far-right. I think you'll find that I'm actually on your side of most of these issues. I wholeheartedly agree about the threat that fascism poses here and abroad. I study these issues daily. In fact, if you haven't read it yet I highly recommend Secretary Albright's recent book on the subject; it's illustrative, informative, and more than a little bit scary.

But I disagree about Antifa and their methods. If you present yourself as a lawless mob of anonymous provocateurs, you shouldn't be surprised when that's how you're received. As Dr. King said: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

Fascism is on the rise everywhere, as explained in this new book: https://www.amazon.com/Fascism-Warning-Madeleine-Albright/dp/0062802186/ref=sr_1_1
