The metal will dull your rotary blade, so I don't recommend it. For me, the ruler that I use the most is 6x24 acrylic. The markings seem useless initially, but after use, they make a big difference. I bought this one recently, and am very happy with it. It seems like all of the lines are straight and square, even though it is not the brand that I think most people would recommend.
Depending on what you are sewing here are a few tools I'm so glad I have, with a few Amazon links to versions I have.
Have so much fun! Sewing has brought me so much joy and I hope it does the same for you.

Clear acrylic? Like one of these?
Honestly, I've gotten so fed up with cutters that I just use an x-acto knife on a cutting mat with the ruler. Since it's clear, I can get it lined up exactly how I want it.
