Wanting reliable gear is not irrational. I've had a pad fail (my XTherm) and it's a pain to deal with.

Andrew Skurka used to say he used his food bag as a pillow. He argues leaving the food out away from your camp is inviting wildlife to take it, and near you is the safest place for it since animals are afraid of you.
Also, I have a FlexAir medical pillow (large), and it definitely gets wide enough for side sleeping. Fully inflated it's practically like a basketball.
I have one of these. I find it immensely preferable to stuffing clothes or a jacket in a stuff sack or something along those lines. I always seem to end up with a zipper or a button in the ear all night when I do that.
If the alternative to a stuff sack full of clothes is nothing, I find that nothing is preferable.
These things are of negligible weight and stupidly cheap, though.
