if it lights up at all, even if it looks like one of those black light bulbs that's kind of purple, that is not a ceramic heat emitter. this is a ceramic heat emitter. it must be used with a porcelain base lamp.

I would suggest combining any heating element (including the heating pad) with a thermostat to prevent burning your animal.
