I use these trimming shears on the hair behind my Aussie's ears as well as his "pants." I like them because they don't trim the fur in a blunt way. They aren't super sharp and I wouldn't worry about nicks with them as much as normal scissors, but if the mats are bad a groomer might be best and then you can maintain them with the shears.
