Same here, but there isn't much. That's why so many people really want SC to be awesome.

Anyways, the old Wing Commander games (who were made by Chris Roberts) are available on www.gog.com, I just started playing WC3 a while ago and have to say, even though the graphics are pretty meh the game itself and the story are pretty great. Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker, The Joker in the Animated Series and the new Arkham games) is the main character, so that's awesome as well.

There is also the X series (available on steam), but it's more economy and exploration based from what I have been told.

If you're not bothered by older graphics then there are a bunch of games that would be worth trying. As I already mentioned WC (starting at 3 it has actual 3d graphics and this looks a lot better), Freespace 2 (great story), and possibly Freelancer, Wing Commander: Privateer and Freespace 1. (But I have not played those myself. Just read some reviews I guess.

ALSO: For the lazy, here are the links to all the games I have just talked about!

YET ANOTHER ALSO:

There are some interesting other space games being worked on. These are work in progress Kickstarter projects:

Kinetic Void http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/seanpollman/kinetic-void http://badlandstudio.com/kinetic-void/ Also available via Steam Early-Access (It's very much alpha though. At the moment there is not much to do.) http://store.steampowered.com/app/227160/?snr=1_7_15__13

AND ON TOP OF THAT ANOTHER ALSO: If you're generally interested in space on top of just wanting to shoot some stuff from a space ship you might enjoy Kerbal Space Program! https://kerbalspaceprogram.com/ http://store.steampowered.com/app/220200/?snr=1_7_15__13

WE DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH ALSOS YET, SO LET'S HAVE ANOTHER ONE! Make sure to check out some of the game-specific subreddits! /r/StarCitizen, /r/X3TC (X-series), /r/EliteDangerous

Now I'm done and my fingers hurt. Hope this assortment of games brings at least some of you some entertainment!

> Is a game like "Eve" the only good option?

This is actually very bad option. It's a MMO and you can dogfight, but it's more famous from its massive battles, when server chokes up. Sheeps are only visible from the outside, you control your ship using mouse, weapons work on cooldowns.

Now, couple older (like last century) options:

These two combine space sim with RTS:

Star Citizen does looks great, but it's still in very alpha state. You can get either Squadron 42 which will be single player portion of the game in the vein of pretty much everething I've posted above, or Star Citizen which will be MMO, with mission, trade etc. like:

In the States you can get it on Amazon here or here. I'm not sure what's available in Europe, but maybe Amazon will ship to you.

Edit: They're physical copies, sure, but it's better (for CR, who deserves his cut) than torrenting.

Freelancer will run on just about anything. It is a great space game, with a nice story. Sadly it is not on any online game store, so you need the actually game, and amazon has it, though the price, wow the price. Get it used :). Or find it elsewhere.

Independence War 2: EOC is my favorite space game bar none. Space cowboy up man.

I don't think microsoft is selling it digitally, but you can buy a hardcopy of it here

I will have to look up a site to purchase Freelancer. I played it back in the day and it wouldn't be that bad to go back and play it again.

I was gifted a copy of the DLC for Universal Combat. I have already tried it but am holding off on making a video until I have properly learned my new editing software and have some more footage to compare between the two for the supposed graphics upgrade.

I refuse to play BC3000AD. Mostly because it's going to just end up being a older, crappier version of Universal Combat. Nope. Not doing that. Even I have limits.

I plan to revisit LoD but will have to re-purchase the game to do so. Not really inclined to do that at this moment since I still have more of Universal Combat to do. I also never really intended to be that guy that takes punishment playing shit games, but hey...it's been fun. I just hope people appreciate my other videos I want to do as well!

Wifes surgery should go fine. Thanks for the boost of confidence!

I do appreciate any feedback on my videos and any suggestion for games to play in the future. I will look into getting a copy of Freelancer as well as LoD: Tactics after I finish the next video for UC:Lyrius whatever.

EDIT: http://www.amazon.com/Freelancer-PC/dp/B000085AHJ

That wasn't too hard. I will get around to that.

> I'm still slightly confused. So my understanding now is the game remains in alpha currently.

Calling what's out now alpha might be overstating it. They have a few playable modules, but if you want to be able to do anything other than look at your ship in the hangar, racing, or deathmatch style dogfights, you're going to have to wait. That being said, what's out now is pretty fun, and in six months to a year it should be amazing.

If you want to play something like this right now, Freelancer is a cult favorite, which some of the same people made. It's a little hard to get (you need to buy physical discs, since it's not for sale as a download anywhere), but it still has an active modding community. It's on nowhere near the same level, but if you like space fighters, it's a great game.

u/sushi_cw · 1 pointr/gamingsuggestions

Freelancer was already mentioned, and is a tried-and-true classic of space exploration/trading. It's pretty much a perfect fit for what you describe.

Elite:Dangerous is coming out soon, although you may want to wait a few months for some more features and a bit more richness to the universe. It's definitely on the "difficult to learn" side of things.

If you want a game that is heavy on exploration (but without the trading), check out Ur-quan masters (aka Star Control 2). Happily it's free.

If you want a non-space trading/exploration game, try Sid Meier's Pirates!. Not traditional fantasy though.

I have a cdrom buried somewhere in a box of old software, but other than eBay or similar I don't know how to obtain it currently.

Amazon has it for an okay price.
