No, you can play GameCube games on the Wii. All you have to do is buy a copy of Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness (they're pretty cheap used), a GameCube controller (also pretty cheap), and a memory card (probably pretty cheap, but not sure).

If you buy this memory card (which has great reviews), you can use it for future GameCube games because it has a lot of space. You can also use the controller for future GameCube games. All of this costs about the same as one new game, but I feel you have the potential to get a lot more usage out of everything if you play your cards correctly. Hope I helped. xD
