The "bigger picture answer" is that they're trying to give people a totally new experience: genuine VR. This is a company filled with smart people that have big dreams. I suspect the Rift as we know it is just a waypoint along the path to something as close to the holodeck or Lawnmower Man as you can get.

As for right now? The current Oculus Rift shouldn't even be considered a monitor replacement; the resolution is too low. It's a prototype meant to get developers into playing with VR. I actually liken it to the early 90s with Rend386, some early HMDs, and hacking the PowerGlove as a gestural input device. It's exciting to see those times return!

If you're interested in the history of homebrew VR hacking, you might pick up a used copy of Garage VR. It would be almost useless today from a practical perspective, but it really shows you how long people have been playing with this stuff and why they are obsessed with it.

I don't, but this is the book that got me and my friends started in VR hacking back when I was in high school: http://www.amazon.com/Garage-Virtual-Reality-Book-Disk/dp/0672302705
