If I were you I'd buy this:

I keep one on my dresser. It's very sharp, has 2 edges, light, and easy to use.

Also get this motion detector and put it on the floor facing your door:

Expensive things and processions can be replaced but your sense of security can never be fixed. They stole that from you and that is most devastating thing of all. Ive been there man and thank god they didn't get your gun, I would have felt horrible if they had gotten their hands on my weapons and used them to hurt somebody, so that is some form of consolation of the current event unfolding in your mind right now. When they busted into my place they didn't get much seeing how I had a cost effective security system in place that I put together myself.

For future reference for yourself protecting your home is about putting as many barriers up as possible in order to increase the time they have to spend inside your home thus greatly reducing the amount of stuff they can steal, the moment they break in the clock starts for them. First you have to sit down and think about points of entry and weak spots in your defenses. But I guess they pointed a big one out for you, the windows.

When I had my break in when I was going to college we didn't have shatter proof windows, also was their point of entry. But I know you can these days get a liquid treatment for them making them shatter resistant, don't know the cost. Also you might want to look into shatterproof film to put over them here are some US vendors of the product if your interested. But what I did put up was several things was frosted pieces of Plexiglas on both sides of the window. Its cheaper because I cut and put them in myself and it added privacy to the downstairs and strengthen the windows some more and hid the window sensor alarms that I had put on them. This one wasn't the one I used but mine required a key to shut them off when triggered. My roommates at the time scoffed at my little project but soon took note to reinforce their doors a bit more and added deadbolts to them so when they weren't home they had their stuff locked up. My three other roommates lived on the second floor and I was on the first hence my level of concern in case of a break-in.

They did smash the window but later when looking at the window one could see it took more then one hit to knock it out. They moved into the living room where nothing of value was present and the TV was a 42 inch TV with was bolted to the TV stand, not to mention it was an old school HD TV with the heavy ass back making it a bitch to steal unlike a flat screen these days. I think they noted its weight and the fact it was bolted down and left it be and moved onto the nearest target, my room. All the while the window alarm was screaming in the kitchen drawing attention to their break`in every moment they stayed inside.

They kicked in my door which set off the motion alarm that I set up inside my room, similar to this. They couldn't get into my closet which I had bothered to reinforce with a better lock and a makeshift kick plate I had put in by driving in nails into several flat pieces of sheet of stainless steel metal I had bought dirt cheap from a metal scraper. I kept my guns and other things of high value in there and I was going to protect it the best I could. I didn't bother much with the door going into my room because it came with a good deadbolt lock and I figured if they were going to bust it open there was little I could do to prevent that. The second alarm I think triggered them to flee. We think it was more then one because one of the door upstairs was attempted to be kicked in but failed to finish the job. All in all I think I spent about 300 bucks on new locks and sensors tools and supplies for a bare minimum of protection. They made away with some loose DVD's, a cheap DVD player, a jar of change about 40 bucks in it, a PS2 (from the living room), my roommate's bike in the hall and my crappy desktop, but failed to get my good laptop because it was locked up in the closest. If your roommates don't want to protect their stuff at least protect your own. GL and stay safe.

Motion sensor for a security system definitely.

Source: Family house is wired with these for a full house security system. Of course we never use it (very safe suburban neighborhood) but even if the security is not on/in use, The sensors remain on- and blink red when you pass by them.

You may have an unused security system in your apartment. Check for an unused panel somewhere. If it's not wall-mounted like a thermostat/heating/ac panel, try inside a closet (the main controls for ours were in the front door coat closet).

Of course, it could just be a single unit (wireless) motion sensor like this one that perhaps the previous tenant installed?
