Not already mentioned- Giants in the Earth. As a scion of Nords and a man married to a woman off kilter it appeals to me.

Shogun. Motherlovin' Shogun, and the entire Asian Saga. The TV adaptations of Shogun and The Noble House are the bees knees. Dirk Struan from Tai-Pan is a role model from me- the way he hates Brock just appeals to me.

I consider Moby Dick, and the Iliad/Odyssey as must reads. Even more so than the others before. I'm not yet through Don Quixote, but its looking promising.

Giants in the Earth follows a Norwegian family as they try to get their start in the Dakota territory. It's the first of a trilogy so you can check them out if this is what you are looking for.

the only two books i have left from that class are: "the emigrants" http://www.amazon.com/The-Emigrants-Vilhelm-Moberg/dp/1568493126

and "giants in the earth" http://www.amazon.com/Giants-Earth-Prairie-Perennial-Classics/dp/0060931930

my knowledge comes from a university class at the u of minnesota "scandinavian history" or the likes; as taught by 75-80 y/o swedish guy who you had a slightly hard time understanding every now and then. the guy talked about some of the stuff like he personally knew people who went thru it (and as a young kid, he did indeed meet them).

>almost impossible to find anywhere

Maybe you're not US-based, but Amazon can get you a copy by this Friday if you have Prime. $13 for brand-new paperback. Lots and lots of other options as well. Maybe your definition of "impossible" is much different than mine...
