Maybe try some robotics? At school in Germany we used the Asuro, found it on the US Amazon. Not the cheapest but maybe you find it cheaper myself. It's been devised originally by the German Aerospace centre but is now distributed by a company called arexx. I've also got a caterpillar robot from them if you don't want a robot on wheels.
For these robots you'll have to do some soldering, which might be a bit harder without the support if things go wrong. I did manage to assemble the caterpillar after the Asuro myself though.
There is also ASURO and Pro Bot 128.
