You shouldn't even worry about it if you don't have decent speakers or headphones. If you do, get the Asus Xonar DS or DX or D1. The DX and D1 are the same card except the DX is PCI-E x1 and the D1 is PCI. The DS is PCI. The DX and D1 are better cards and will produce a little cleaner sound. The DS gives you the option to upgrade the OP amps to something different. There are a bunch of OP amps to choose from and they will all make the audio sound a little different. So you can choose ones that produce a sound that you like. It looks pretty easy to do, just take the old ones off and drop the new ones in.

For headphones, Grado Labs has great headphones at very reasonable prices. Here is a pair for $100. The Grado SR80i headphones are amazing headphones for the price. If you can spend more on headphones, step up to the Grado SR 225i.

If you want to get speakers, these are pretty amazing.

I use a pair of Grado SR225i. Absolutely love them, they were an investment for me and they've been worth every penny.

Headfi is a good place for info, just don't let the site convince you that you need $1000 headphones, lol. I've got a set of Grado SR225i's

In that price range I'd be partial to the Sennheiser HD380Pro

or

The Grado SR225i
