Jeff Lemire's recent run on Green Arrow is critically praised. Here's the first volume of that run: http://www.amazon.com/Green-Arrow-Vol-Kill-Machine/dp/1401246907/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1417156108&sr=8-4

I would recommend starting with Green Arrow:Year One by Andy Diggle. It modernized his origin and is what the island flashbacks were roughly based on.

Then I would move to the best Green Arrow run from the New 52 by Jeff Lemire which can be found in Volume 4: The Kill Machine, Volume 5: The Outsiders War, and the first half of Volume 6: Broken which releases in May.

I would also recommend Green Lantern/Green Arrow by Denny O'Neill & Neil Adams, as it was the original run that modernized the character.

As for other characters from the show appearing in the New 52, Roy is a main character in Red Hood and the Outlaws along with Red Hood (Jason Todd, the second Robin) and Starfire. Laurel was also the leader in Birds of Prey, but I never read it so I don't know if it's good or not.

Edit: And for a good Ra's al Ghul story I would check out JLA: Tower of Babel.

In 2011, DC launched "The New 52", a reboot that reset every title back to #1, and condensed/erased many portions of the old continuity, in order to make the new books more accessible to new readers. Generally, you can start with "trades", which are volumes of issues (generally around 5-8) collected in a novel form. Vol. 1 of any series is usually a good place to start.

For Batman and Batman-related books, I recommend starting with the following:
Batman, Vol. 1: The Court of Owls
Batman and Robin, Vol. 1: Born to Kill
Nightwing, Vol. 1: Traps and Trapezes
Batman: The Black Mirror - This is actually just before The New 52, but I recommend this mainly because it's a very well-loved modern story that made Scott Snyder (the current Batman writer) famous. It's also fairly accessible to new readers.

For other characters, I would recommend:
Green Arrow, Vol. 4: The Kill Machine - The first three volumes are heavily disliked by fans. Vol. 4 is when the next writer (Jeff Lemire) takes over, and he establishes a different status quo and tone, making it easy for new readers to jump in.
The Flash, Vol. 1: Move Forward
Wonder Woman, Vol. 1: Blood
Earth 2, Vol. 1: The Gathering

You've heard correct. Best new book I bought this year

If you haven't read anything Green Arrow yet, I highly, highly, highly recommend reading Jeff Lemire's run, The Kill Machine, in the new 52. It's issues 17 - 24. It's entirely self contained so you don't need any previous knowledge and it is possibly the best comic run to be released in the new 52

Honestly Green Arrow isn't even that good until #17, the TPB for Green Arrow: Kill Machine collects #17 - #24 and #23.1, and it comes out in a few weeks

> Green Arrow Vol. 1: The Midas Touch (The New 52)

No. New 52 GA is pretty much universally panned until Lemire and Sorrentino take over duringGreen Arrow Vol. 4: The Kill Machine (The New 52). And there's isn't a need to have read anything before, it's a perfectly good starting point.

Because no one told me when I first got started (if you already know this than just ignore me):

Most comics (99% of all Marvel/DC) publish weekly comics in single issue form, so Green Arrow #1 one month, Green Arrow #2 the next month, and so on. Every 4, 5, or 6 issues they will take the single issues and put them together into a collected edition, the paperback version is usually called a "trade" and the hardcover is just "hardcover." Most of the books you'll find at a book store or comic shop are a series of single issues put together.

So Green Arrow Vol. 4: The Killing Machine (which I would suggest) is actually just Green Arrow #17-#24 and #23.1.

Other than that I would just suggest going to a comic shop, look around, and just see what looks appealing to you. Try something you know nothing about. On this subreddit and on lots of blogs there are "Where To Start" type threads/posts and you can always ask questions if you got em.

Welcome to the greatest hobby ever!!

Each of these books cost around $10 from amazon, all come highly recommended:

Flash: Volume 1

Batman: Volume 1 Volume 2. This was a year long arc and both volumes are one story. The current run in Detective comics, called Icarus, is fantastic, but it hasn't been collected yet.

Green Arrow: Volume 4. Don't read books 1-3. You'll thank me later.

Green Lantern carries on from the old series, which starts here

I would also recommend the Wonder Woman series (starts here) and the Aquaman series here (Aquaman rocks now, in case you haven't heard).

I hope you have lots of fun reading and collecting comics, it really is a great hobby.

Since you're interested in The Flash, I'd recommend starting with Flashpoint, the event which lead directly into the New 52.

After that, start with The Flash Vol 1: Flash Forward, Batman Vol 1: The Court of Owls, and Green Arrow Vol 4: The Kill Machine.

I'd also recommend Justice League, Wonder Woman, Action Comics, Superman/Wonder Woman, and Superman Unchained.

I personally would start with the New 52. It's a great jumping on point for new readers. You can get trades (Issues in a collected format) that are basically the graphic novel you are looking for costing about $10 on amazon.

I would start with Vol 1 Batman, The Court of Owls. Flash is also great from Vol 1: Move Forward. I don't know too much about Green Lantern so I don't know where to start as there is a lot of material there. As for Justice League, start with Vol 1: Origin.

If you're looking to be caught up with the series, then you can jump on after any main story arc. There is a list somewhere here but I don't know where it is. Maybe someone could get that for me. Also I would recommend Green Arrow Vol 4: The Kill Machine based on your tastes. Green Arrow Vol 1-3 aren't very good, so I don't recommend those .

The links to all the trades above will be here:

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Start with what you like. Start Here for GA. Volume 5 will finish the story (not out yet), and starting soon, Green Arrow will be written by the guys who write Arrow, so even that might be a good starting point for single issues.

If you want more, think about what kind of genres you're interested in. If you like Space, check out a Green Lantern title. If you like superheroes, check out Justice League, if you enjoy more of the "human" and "non superhero" side of things, check out Animal Man or All-Star Western, or a Batman title.

Introduction to Comics

How to Get Into Comic Books (13:40) | Patrick Willems

Consider your intent/commitment. Think about your favorite shows, movies, books, etc. Reading primarily for enjoyment or encyclopedic knowledge? Collecting? Have the time/resources to read 50 or 500 comics per character?

Don’t try to read everything at once. There’s too much. Forget about catching up, continuity, universes, etc. for now. Older comics can be an acquired taste for modern audiences, so they aren’t necessarily ideal starting points. Writers change often, characters get re-worked, and origins are re-told. Remember, there are many great characters, creators, publishers, etc. to explore.

Pick an interesting character/team and seek their most popular/acclaimed stories. Focus on self-contained, complete stories in one corner of the universe. There will be unexplained references/characters, just persevere or Wiki. Don’t let the tangled web of shared-universe comics overwhelm you. Think of it like solving a jigsaw puzzle one small piece at a time until you finally see the big picture.

Discover your preferences and let them guide you. Don’t get stuck preparing/over-analyzing, just start reading. Do you like/dislike old/new comics? Specific writers/genres? Cartoony/realistic art? Familiar/weird concepts? References/self-contained? All-ages/mature content? Follow these instincts. Didn’t understand a reference? Maybe read that next.

I'd wait another 2 weeks for volume 4 of the new 52 Green Arrow.

Buy it at a local shop if you get the chance. I don't know if things have changed but last time I went downtown Toronto I went into this comic book shop which was in a basement. That was maybe 7 years ago. It turned me off comics for a long time because I was looking to get into them but the people working there were just dicks when I asked anything. If you can find a place with nice people then buy from them.

Okey, so this is (obviously) my opinion but I'd start reading in this order:

  • Year One
  • Kill Machine
  • The Outsiders War
  • Broken

And then move on to Green Arrow Rebirth run which is the newest and ongoing run. You can also continue the run after Broken but in my opinion it was pretty meh. Rebirth has been great though. Don't read any super old stuff at first, comic fans like to recommend that stuff but it's not for most beginners.

My holy trinity of runs that everyone should read(imo) is Grant Morrison's run on Animal Man, Saga of The Swamp Thing, Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol. I find them to be the pinnacle of comic book and pretty life changing.

They're very well know and there's a strong possibility you've already read them(but if you haven't I strongly recommend you do) and for my entry I will suggest Green Arrow The Kill Machine, it's the start of the Lemire/Sorrentino run that's going on right now. It's very well crafted, action packed and dynamic. Also, very new reader friendly.

Volumes refers to a collection of the individual issues. Typically, but not always, they are centered around one story arc. One Volume should usually have collected in it 5-8 individual issues. So Volume 1 of New-52 Green Arrow is just the first few individual issues brought together, while Volume 2 is the next few, etc, etc. It's best to check DC's website out to make sure what issues are collected in the volume.

Now, you do not want New 52 Green Arrow Volumes 1-3. They are garbage and a great injustice to the character. Green Arrow Vol 4. is a great place to start off for Green Arrow in the new-52, particularly if you like the show. I would also suggest some other Green Arrow comics which, while no longer in continuity, are must haves in my opinion for fans of Green Arrow. They are Year One, Hunters Moon, Here There Be Dragons, and The Longbow Hunter. All excellent and classic Green Arrow reads, which while not in current continuity help form the collective opinion of Ollie as a character.

u/DementiaPrime · 1 pointr/DCcomics

Well to start off if you look at the sidebar there is a recommended reading section that includes New 52 books and for New 52 green Arrow it recommends vol. 4 when Lemire took over since the previous writers did a pretty awful job with the character. Secondly; this is volume 4 and under the description you will see a link that says "Read more" and when you click it the description expands and shows which issues are collected in that volume so volume 4 collects 17 through 24 and also 23.1(and 23.1 is a origin story for Count Vertigo and a stand alone story).
