One of my favorite non-fiction authors is Mary Roach. She picks a topic and gathers all kinds of detailed and odd information about it, often covering the kinds of details that the genuinely curious find fascinating.

Stiff is about what humans do with the dead remains of other humans, including her visit to the body farms where scientists figure out the cascade of beetles, bugs and grubs invade the remains.

Gulp is all about the human digestive tract

Bonk is about sex, including the author convincing her husband to have sex in an MRI for science

Packing for Mars is all about the details of putting people into space

Basically, I think everything she writes is worth reading if you write fiction.

Thanks for the recommendation! It's on Kindle Unlimited, so I just snagged it for "FREE".

I'd recommend anything by Mary Roach. She delves into the "WHY's?" and curious little bits of background information while having a lot of fun.

You can definitely train your taste buds. Check out this book by Mary Roach called "Gulp." She has a chapter where she tries to become a professional taster, it's really entertaining and she has a ton of great information.

Why Calories Count by Marion Nestle looks good - I just ordered it for my Kindle, but haven't started it yet. It admittedly has more of an "angle" than Mary Roach's works (more political stuff) but does cover the nutrition side of food too. Also, I'm sure you already know this, but Mary Roach's new book Gulp does cover the mechanics of digestion and how our bodies deal with food. :)
