The reality of shaving is it's going to itch like crazy for a few days as the hair starts to grow back. It's not so bad once you get used to it, but it's really bad at first and if you only do it occasionally. Also, you will only have that nice trimmed look for a couple days - same concept as the 5'0 clock shadow.
About 2 years ago I started man's aping with sugar wax. You do it at home at your own pace. It does hurt a bit for the first few seconds, but it's not nearly as bad as you might think. Plus the results last a few weeks.
