Sun viewing on the cheap! If you already have eyepieces, a box, and some tape, all you need to do is grab a monocular from your site of choice for cheap! ($10-$20)

Steps:

  1. Get a monocular. I went with a 16x52 from Amazon that I got for $13 bucks. I wish I went with this instead because it has more magnification. Might not need a barlow then.

  2. Take your monocular and place it on the end of a box, and trace out the end of the monocular with a pen onto the box so you can cut out a hole for it. The closer to the center of the end of the box is better, but you may need to offset the hole to the left or right if it's smaller (like a shoebox) so that you can also make a hole for you to look through. Make sure that the end that you actually view through is touching the box, not the other end. That other end points at the sun!

  3. Cut out a hole for the monocular.

  4. If you have a higher power monocular, this step may not be necessary -- Tape up your eyepieces to the eyepiece on the monocular. This has to fit through the hole in the box, so hopefully you don't have gi-normous eyepieces.

  5. Cut out a hole for you to look through. Make sure that you can look through this hole and not block the monocular from seeing the sun.

  6. Place your monocular with taped up eyepieces into the hole you made for it, with the outer end of the monocular facing away from the box.

  7. Point the monocular with box at the sun, and look inside the box at the same time. You should not be looking at the sun directly at any point, you should see a projected image of the sun inside the box!

  8. If the sun is blurry, adjust the focuser on the monocular until it isn't anymore.

  9. Profit! You may want to put something white in the end of the box to project onto, as the cardboardy brown doesn't look that great. A piece of paper or a paper plate work fine.

Maybe a monocular?
