I have had good results with two things I learned from books. One was going through the exercises in Rose Rosetree's Become The Most Important Person In The Room: Your 30-Day Plan For Empath Empowerment.

The other was learning how to "inhibit" in the sense that FM Alexander used the term. Missy Vineyard's book, How You Stand..., does a good job describing it and has exercises on how to learn it. The first key is learning how to "rise up to your attic" as she puts it.

Rosetree's books are full of her cheesy humor (not my cuppa) and, personally, I don't think her theoretical model about empath stuff is accurate. But I recommend the book anyway because the exercises are useful experiments. She gets a lot of that stuff right, in my view.

Missy's book is great and I found her description of how she picks up what's going on with her clients and students (later in the book) to be a very accurate description of the mechanics of empaths picking up stuff from people in general. The only difference is that she describes it as though being in physical contact with a person is necessary. It goes without saying that isn't the case, or at least not for empaths.

Understanding "how it happens" is somewhat helpful. But regularly practicing is crucial. Just reading didn't help me that much. Setting aside time to practice each day really did.

Good luck!
