I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution
It was such a heady time for pop music and pop culture in general. I’m waiting for a seven-hundred page Pulitzer-winning exposé book on the history and behind the scenes of the beginnings, rise and sad ending of TRL and the generation of youngsters that grew up watching it and idolizing the artists featured on it. Kind of like I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution, but focusing on TRL specifically, and with lots of interviews with the people in front of and behind the scenes that made it happen like that Live From New York book about SNL. Imagine how cool it would be to read and learn about what actually happened during iconic moments like Mariah’s TRL’s breakdown or Eminem’s takeover of the studio from the point of view of the executives, the crew and especially the artists and celebrities themselves.
Wow. That brings back a ton of memories.
If anyone is interested, the event is talked about in detail in this book http://www.amazon.com/Want-My-MTV-Uncensored-Revolution/dp/0452298563

I feel sorry for those who didn't live when MTV ruled the world. When a single bad video would make or break a band. When everyone would wait for a world release of a video. And videos were works of art, many directors winning award. Sometimes it was the cutting edge of entertainment. Now it is only movies that do that.
Someone released a book recently about the MTV era. I want to get it.

Within the context of music on MTV there's a great book on the subject. It's good if you're into that sort of thing.
There was an oral history book on MTV a few years back.
Martha Quinn and some other VJ's wrote biographies as well.
No sources really, but I'd look into the history of The Monkees TV show as a forerunner to short form videos, as well as Monkees member Mike Nesmith trying to launch a MTV like channel in the late 70's.
There's a really good ..er... biography? about how it got started, called I Want My MTV Fascinating read.
