A bullet journal is great if it works for you.

Sadly, it did not for me for the following reasons:

I couldn't very well plan too far ahead
I spent far too much time on creating the pages, thereby procrastinating on the actual tasks
you have to know how much space you're going to need. either you're wasting paper or you're cramming in stuff

Instead I got myself an actual calendar. It's DIN A5, and has
a yearly overview over two consecutive pages (2018 +2019)
a monthy overview with two months per page (column) (2018+2019)
one week over two pages. The left page is divided into 7 days and the right is blank for notes
and it has a few empty pages in the back for further random notes
This worked best for me to be honest, as I could plan far enough ahead and write on the side should something take up more room than expected.
