And good eye mask for when they need to nap during the day. I found a slightly weighted one works good and stays in place. I like this one as it has little plastic pellets in it to conform to your face, really blocks out light good, yet still is cool and lets air flow.

Hey, I have the same problem. Had since I was 19. Dark circles are much more pronounced for me than for other people. I look like I got in a fight recently if I don't take care of myself. I use a humidifier in my room in the winter so I don't dry up. I have three I put in a bowl in the freezer and I use them maybe a half hour to an hour a day (I can rotate them if they lose their cold, that's why I have 3 but they still feel ok without being cold) while I listen to a podcast or whatever. I also try to reduce my time in front of screens - computer, tv, cell phone, etc. as that really aggravates my eyes.

I also got a pair of gunnar glasses which helps a ton with my dark circles from using screens. - specifically sheadog prescription yellow tint. Most are yellow tint and non-prescription.

I'm going to second the eye mask -- You know how "weighted blankets" are pretty popular right now (I have one and LOVE it), well you can get weighted eye masks. I travel a lot and this thing is a game changer for me. It completely blocks out light (because it's filled with glass beads it contours to your face so no light seeping in), it's super cooling and comfortable. It also reduces puffy eyes from jet lag, etc. You can get them on Amazon, this is the one I have and I use it every night even though I don't have a light problem like you. It may be a good solution for you if you cannot get the lights changed.

A few of us have found the compression sleep masks are of a much higher quality. Like this one.

If I need to do serious icing, I still use a giant gel pack.

When I had my first aura I freaked out too- esp since my family has a history of eye issues and brain tumors. (this was after I had migraines for awhile too) In a panic I called my doc who said I should call my neuro, and he said they are pretty normal. I still went to the eye doctor just in case the next week as I kept having them, but it seems they are linked to my chronic migraines.

For me, I take a break from being on the computer/reading/watching tv and relax. If I'm having a full on migraine, I lay down and close my eyes, and I have an eye pillow that you put in the freezer that I put over my eyes, and try to take a nap if possible. If I just have the aura (which does happen) I know that I either have a migraine coming or just need to get somewhere dark, so I just try to relax somewhere not as bright.

Also, sunglasses with the UV filter seem to help me when I go outside, since for me I get the auras mostly with bright light or eye strain. Hope that helps!

I'm going to start using the mat that I bought 2 years ago!

I don't have trouble falling asleep, I have troubling tucking myself in, so to speak.. I've fallen asleep with the lights on, fully clothed, unshowered, and in uncomfortable positions if I give in to negative self-talk. If I make that choice..

I've even fallen asleep needing to pee! But I try to supress the urge. I think this is because I didn't feel safe getting out of bed at night.

Here are things that help me sleep optimally

  1. Eyemask- blocks out the little light my curtains allow. Fits my face well & there is a gap between the mask and my eyes.

  2. No liquids 3 hours before bed. No food 4 hours before bed. Lessens the need for bathroom trips and discomfort from digestion.

  3. 3M Micropore Tape. I tape my mouth to ensure I breathe through my nose & get 18% more oxygen. Numerous benefits. If you ever wake up with dry mouth, look into this.
  4. COLD Shower. Keep my bed relatively clean and free of dust. Also I dust inbetween my toes with a handtowel as I get into bed.
  5. Always have earplugs, just in case.
  6. Lavender oil on my pillow for aromatherapy

I have a sleep disorder and am sensitive to light. The way my bedroom is set up puts me under a skylight as well. (Great at night for stars, terrible past dawn. haha.)

This is the eyemask I have. It is comfortable and molds to my face, but it is thick as hell and no light gets through. You can't change the inconsiderate roomie, but at least something like that might help. :)

Not a doctor but I am someone who gets frequent migraines. My doctor strongly suggested I get my eyesight tested as I may be inadvertently squinting a lot and causing eye strain. He also checked my blood pressure.
