This is what I used for the majority of the foam. I used some thinner foam from a local craft store.
We scrubbed our horse stall mat down as well, both sides, let it sit and dry. Every now and then, I'll get a whiff of rubber but it's not often and it's a mild, faint smell.
If you definitely don't want to deal with the rubber though, there are some cheap foam mats out there, but they're incredibly cheap, no grip, serving little to no purpose, except providing a buffer from steel to floor.
