It's really simple, it traps their poops and keeps them in that area, I put some paper towel under/in it to absorb the pee. You just pick up the whole thing and dump the poops in the trash and replace the paper towels and maybe rinse it off when it needs to be cleaned.

I also prefer the top-entry box because my boyfriend's got one, and his cat doesn't even get in the box. She just sits on top like it's a toilet. So he's got no litter problems. But my Kiki's about half his cat's size, and she just gets in there and digs. And explodes out the top, showering a good 3-foot radius with cat litter. The mat helps, but it gets EVERYWHERE.

Oh yeah I have one of those but it doesn't do enough right now. He's pretty energetic and tends to run out of the litter box. Doesn't exactly help the situation either.
Edit: In case anyone is interested, I just bought this litter matt and it's awesome.
maybe look into the litter robot, we have one and smell isn't an issue. i use arm and hammer clump and seal litter and it's pretty good.

If you have laminate floors, it would probably be easier for you to sweep the litter into a pile and use a handheld dustbuster to vacuum it up. You might also want to invest in a litter mat that traps the litter in to decrease the overall amount of mess you have to clean up. These are what I use. They're a bit pricey (I have 3 cats, so I had to buy 4 of these), but worth it.
