Hm bummer you can't get a teacher yet, it's supremely helpful to have someone pointing out bad technique before it turns into a habit. If I had to do things over again, I would practice slowly and with perfect form for a long time. So make sure to get yourself a metronome. Most online ones suck so I'd just buy a cheap one. I'm on mobile so I can't do a fancy link but here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0757995500?pc_redir=1396851218&robot_redir=1

That is IMO the best resource on learning technique. In place of a teacher, I would highly highly highly highly recommend that book and DVD's.

I am not a huge Dream Theater fan, but I do respect them a lot. John Petrucci is really an amazing guitarist. His dvd Rock Discipline has some great advice for warming up and dexterity. He is also good at explaining things in a ELI5 kind of way.

John Petrucci’s Rock Discipline DVD will sort you out with regards to technique and speed. String-skipping, endurance, accuracy, warmup and hand health—it covers everything. I had a VHS 20 years ago and it did wonders for me.

As far as picking goes, have a look at Troy Grady’s YouTube channel. If anybody deserves a PhD in picking mechanics, it would be him.
