Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is a kind of literary fusion of Harry Potter and Jane Austen. That should either sound like the best idea ever or the worst idea ever to you: read accordingly.

Johnathon Strange and Mr. Norrell http://www.amazon.com/Jonathan-Strange-Mr-Norrell-Novel/dp/1582344167 fantasy but in more of a modern world than Lord of the Rings. Lord of the Rings, too, for that matter.

I'd recommend [Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell] (http://www.amazon.com/Jonathan-Strange-Mr-Norrell-Novel/dp/1582344167) by Susanna Clarke. Long, but less weird than Gaiman, less intricate than LOTR and a story to really get lost in.

I haven't read this one yet, but it's been screaming at me from my bookshelf. It will probably be the next one that I pick up.

because its one of the most intelligent, the most beautifully written fantasy novels I have ever read.. It's one of the only fantasy novels I have encountered that takes the potential of the genre seriously. It's sophisticated, historically informed, wryly funny, gothic, vast in it's scope and yet very personal. Totally in my top twenty. REad the amazon reviews. LOved by most. Some people hate it, but when you read their reviews it's easy to understand why - they're dullards.

this and also this. The first is a gritty piece of Swedish realistic fiction, and the second is one of the most underrated pieces of fantasy/historical fiction from the past century
