You could consider an NVR lockbox like this one.

Some things I've found:

  1. More cameras are better than fewer, even at lower resolutions and frame rates to save disk space.
  2. Cat5/6 cable is cheap; you time running them is not. So always run more parallel cables than you need, in case one fails (chewed by rodents, etc.).
  3. Definitely use external IR illuminators like this one, which are much better than the built-in camera ones, which are then disabled. This also means fewer false motion alerts from dust, mist, and spiders, which are attracted to the IR LEDs in the cameras.
  4. Before mounting a camera permanently, test its view during the day and night using a temporary clamp or shallow screws.
  5. Read this wiki, especially the part on securing your home network. Although the site focuses on Blue Iris, the wiki pages contain a lot of great advice.
