Kershaw Leek! Current Amazon price is $40, but I've gotten this model for around $30 before. I LOVE this knife, super slim for EDC, great edge, durable. I have a tendency to lose knives so I've bought 4 off this model to date haha... but I've never had a problem with any of them.

I prefer two different types of knives.
My EDC is a Kershaw Leek

And my camp knife is a Mora.

They're both solid and the pair should still come in under budget.

they are. when i divorced I did not want to buy "steak knives", so I bought the two knives I had used for years in the past and knife blocks for them.

If you want a lower-priced but still solid option, maybe a Kershaw Leek?

Kershaw's always good. Be sure to get a half-serrated blade, and it's very handy if it's an automatic, one-handed opening is helpful in a pinch.

I own a half-serrated one of these that has served me well:
Ken Onion Chive

What's great about the above knife is how non-threatening it is, people don't think you're a creep for carrying one.

This is a good knife too, it's just a bit longer and scarier:

Kershaw Leek with serrations, the serrations on this blade are not like your standard serrations as they create a smooth cut rather than a series of unpredictable and messy bites. Steel is a great 14C28N which both takes and holds a good edge and the whole knife is 7'' with a 3'' blade. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Get a pocket knife regardless of the rules. Get good at deploying it from your pocket in one move. Other than that learn how to punch someone in the throat/nuts to get away.

This is my pocket knife. Its just a great tool to have for all sorts of things, but if I ever had to use it on someone the serrated edge would fucking filet someone. Super sharp. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009VC9YA/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_v5MByb4KWWWM2
