At the moment this is looking like a victory. Many bad closed technology/DRM'd systems flourish b/c their customers don't know/care enough to fight it (by not buying a product, or choosing an open alternative, for example). The scathing anti-DRM reviews in this K-CUP 2.0 system seem to show, at least when it comes to coffee, people aren't willing to put up with that shit.
Amazon actually recently started doing this. Here's an example of what I mean. The 3 year protection plan for $11.99 type deal. Not sure how that compares to Staples, but I'd love to know the difference.
