We have something called the kitty tube for our semi feral cats. We live in the Midwest and last year our kitties did very well. We do use straw inside of it because I read it keeps out moisture better.
It is expensive and there are tutorials to make something similar online, but I would have cut off one of my fingers trying to make the holes in a plastic tub, so I considered it savings from an ER trip.
Two cats sleep in it. I am pretty certain they were litter mates and were dumped. I can touch them only periodically when their faces are in the food bowls, so bringing them in is not an option at all.
As all ferals seem to have goofy names ours are named Mouthy and Mama (she was pregnant when she first started coming around. I never saw the litter and she was spayed through TNR after)
