There's no need to ever buy straight needles because you can knit flat on circs.
Pay attention to your gauge--- do your swatch and notice how far you're off when using the recommended yarn and needles. Soon you'll see how you knit--- for example, I almost always go down two needle sizes because I knit loosely. Now that I've figured that out, I can almost always get gauge on the first try.
After you figure out what your 'correct' needle is (like for me, if pattern calls for US8, I use US6), you can look for patterns that you can complete using the needles you already own.

Then maybe it's not the worst idea to try to find some samplers - I really love Knitter's Pride, but I don't know if the other needles you like have sampler sets.
