Holy shit, check out the Amazon reviews for the first BD set. A few days ago, this was highly rated.
PR suicide indeed. Fuck, I was really enjoying this series too.
To add on to this, many enraged fans bombarded the show's bluray listing on Amazon.

Some people mentioned on other forums that the pre-order numbers for the BDs at the time went down dramatically after this incident. If you look at this page on amazon.jp, you can see it still has a pretty brutal rating.
It's a shame too because I really enjoyed the show. But after that whole fiasco...I seriously doubt a s2 will ever happen as /u/Forkii said.

We don't really know what happened, it might have been a cruel joke/prank between friends or hazing, but either way it was in extremely bad taste.
