nothing new here. managers who underestimate what they don't know, look down on employees, fail to run political defense for their shop, micromanage and/or expect pedantic, military obedience will always fail at leading smart people.

this book from 2002: Leading Geeks gives pretty much the same relatively obvious advice (with some annoying stereotyping and nods to coding group work dynamics).

Understand the vast difference in IT culture vs the standard office culture. Respect the knowledge and experience of your key team members. Sheild them from the office politics so they can do their best work for you.
