This, but minus 1TB of storage and prioritize the SSD.

SSDs are the single best upgrade for loading times (which in CS can get quite long with lots of mods and assets), and general "snappiness" of the machine.

1TB is over-kill for most, and if you run low on storage for photos etc you can easily buy an external HDD or NAS for not very much money at all.

A 256GB SSD will do the job just fine for Cities Skylines, a couple of other games, and some documents, but 500GB is more comfortable if you want to install other large games. More than that is un-necessary unless you want to store a large number of videos too.

Something like this would be ideal for $900.

Or this for a little less money for $800. It will perform a little worse for CS (slightly worse CPU), a little better in most other games (better graphics card), and has less storage, but is cheaper.

And at $700, this is the cheapest I'd probably bother with, as you start to lose a little too much performance when you drop significantly below this level.

If the above is too expensive, though, dropping the SSD can get you this which is a bit of a compromise but should still run CS well enough and is hard to argue with at $525

Edit: Although I'll add that I'm not American and just grabbed these for example purposes: you may be able to find better deals for comparable specifications.

Would this be too expensive?

Your best options are probably either the Lenovo Ideapad 510 or the Acer Aspire E15. Both are around the same price, but the Lenovo has a 1TB HDD if you need more storage and the E15 has a SSD. They would work well because they have a GTX 940MX dedicated graphics card which will help a lot for gaming. The Acer is an especially good option if you'd like a solid battery, as it's advertised up to 12 hours.

Neither of these have touch screens though. You won't find any options in your price range that comes with a touch screen, and even then it may not have good pen support for drawing.

If you do want something for drawing, maybe look at the Acer Switch Alpha 12, but you have to buy a pen separately. It won't work nearly as well for gaming since it only has integrated grpahics and less ram.

So I found this Acer Aspire E 15 posted in a deals thread yesterday, which I was about to order when I noticed the Lenovo Ideapad 510 sitting in my cart from about a month ago when I initially started looking at new laptops

Obviously the Acer is about $100 or so more expensive, but the only difference I can find is an additional 4GB RAM—since the Acer normally sells on Amazon for $899.99, I wanted to check and make sure the extra RAM warrants the increase in price

edit: I just noticed this HP Pavilion 15-au010wm which seems to match the Acer specs exactly, including the 12GB total RAM, for $589—am I missing something buried in the specs, or is this just a plain better deal than the Acer?

Yeah, the current ones aren't that great. An AMD A10 is comparable to a dual core Intel i3.

You can get a laptop with an Intel i5 + Nvidia GT 940MX for around $500. Will run the apps and Sims far batter than a laptop with an AMD A10 APU + integrated Radeon R5 graphics (like the HP Pavilion you described in your post).

Note that the Acer has a 1080p TN panel, which could be a dealbreaker. The Lenovo IdeaPad 510 models have an IPS panel as far as I know.

I would perfer you get the Lenovo Ideapad 510.It has the NVIDIA GeForce 940MX that can run fifa 17 smoothly.

The acer aspire liked earlier is indeed a pretty good option however You could also consider this Lenovo Ideapad 510 which come with a better IPS display quality. it has a nice built, fairly lightweight for a gaming laptop, good processing speed but it doesn't come with that extra boot up speed that an ssd brings due to the 1tb hdd that it comes with. however it can be easily swapped.

This Lenovo Ideapad 510 weighs just over 4 pounds and has a very good display.. It has a nice 1080p display with IPS technology which is a great ''to have'' for your grandmother as it allows her to see the screen clearly from all angles ( even if she is not sitting directly in front of the screen).

This Lenovo Ideapad 700 has the SSD but also has a dedicated graphics card and a very powerful quad core processor.

To add, I wouldn't look for "i7". Intel uses the term "i7" in some rather misleading ways, such as for i7-U-series chips, which are near-negligibly faster than i5-U-series chips, and are considerably behind i5-HQ and i7-HQ chips. If you need CPU performance for something, you need HQ. If you don't have particularly intensive requirements, don't worry about i5-U vs i7-U.

That said the Ideapad 700 is good. One additional point to it is that it avoids the very poor quality of most of today's laptop-grade TN screens (poor contrast and viewing angles) by using an IPS screen. This is something that you unfortunately have to watch out for even in a number of more expensive models (Dell, ASUS, and MSI are among the biggest offenders). You can get it $625 through the other link, or $689 (apparently $629 but it seems sold out at the moment, not sure if it'll come back) here with a 256GB SSD but 8GB instead of 12GB RAM. Note from this link it does offer more expensive models, however for those higher prices it's not worth. Much better options exist for those prices if you had a higher budget.

And there's this $515 Ideapad 510 that uses a U-series CPU and lower GPU but keeps the IPS screen.

I would encourage you to take the IdeaPad 510. I found it here at a decent price. but you have plenty of other options.

Yes. This if you want to stick with HP.

The only setback is the 4gb ram but it's DDR4 so that's not a problem. I don't speak Spanish but I think it says full hd witch is good. The Intel HD 620 should run Overwatch and some other games.

But if you are okay with Lenovo I already have something on my wishlist. The first one is used but they say it was only used for a couple of days and for that price. It is way better than the HP one.

What about the Lenovo Ideapad 510 it comes with very similar specs and price to the acer except for the the SSD but I believe you can add an SSD if you want.

The 940mx/m is pretty much the choice in this case. Integrated graphics are still a no go . (Only not if you go for Older or Light indie titles) Lucky For you Something With A 940mx is in your aformentioned price range

If you wait a little more the acer aspire V or acer aspire e15 for ~600 will probably become available again. The models that are out of stock right now have an i5 8250u and mx150 which are much more powerful. They can play most AAA on 1080 with medium graphics or better pretty comfortably.
